Cania Gorge National Park: a guide from Monto

Towering sandstone walls, shady walking tracks and caves shaped over millions of years - Cania Gorge is the North Burnett's headline natural attraction, and it's an easy drive north of Monto.

Why visit Cania Gorge

Cania Gorge is a sandstone gorge carved by Three Moon Creek, with orange-and-cream cliffs, hanging gardens and shady pockets of forest. You can dip into it for a short walk or spend a whole day exploring, and it rarely feels as crowded as Queensland's better-known parks.

For anyone basing themselves in Monto, it's the standout day trip: close enough for a relaxed morning drive, big enough to fill a day, and an easy pairing with nearby Lake Cania.

Walking tracks

The gorge has a network of well-signed walking tracks ranging from short strolls of around twenty minutes to longer routes that take the best part of a day. Most begin from the main day-use and picnic area at the southern end of the gorge.

  • Short, easy walks suit families and anyone short on time.
  • Half-day routes link caves, overhangs and lookout points.
  • Longer walks reward experienced walkers with big gorge views.
  • Check current track lengths, grades and any closures on the official Queensland Parks page before you set out.

Caves, lookouts and wildlife

The gorge is dotted with caves, overhangs and rock features that the tracks are built around, along with lookouts that open up across the valley. Early morning and dusk are the best times for wildlife - keep an eye out for birds, wallabies and, after dark, gliders in the trees.

Take a camera: the warm sandstone colour is at its best in soft morning and late-afternoon light.

Getting there from Monto

From Monto, head north on the Burnett Highway for roughly 11-12 km, then turn onto Cania Road and continue about 12 km to the national park. The route is sealed and suitable for 2WD in normal conditions - after heavy rain, check local road conditions before you go.

Facilities and what to bring

The main day-use area has picnic facilities. Confirm current toilets, drinking water, accessibility and mobile-phone coverage on the official Queensland Parks page rather than assuming - these can change.

  • Water, sun protection and sturdy walking shoes.
  • Snacks or a picnic - there's no shop in the gorge.
  • A charged phone, but don't rely on coverage.
  • Check the weather and any park alerts before leaving Monto.
