Art around town
Monto has leaned into public art in a big way. Street murals and sculptures are scattered through town - including metal-and-sandstone sculptures at Lister Street Parkland and painted water towers - and just south of town the Three Moon silos mark the most northern point on the Australian Silo Art Trail.
It's an easy self-guided wander: pick up a local art-trail map and spend an hour ticking off the murals and installations.
Heritage and history
The Monto Heritage Trail is a self-guided stroll through a main street with buildings dating back to the 1920s, taking in the Monto Town Hall (built 1939-40). The Monto Historical and Cultural Centre keeps the district's story in a set of well-kept heritage buildings - confirm current opening days before you plan around it.
Day trips from Monto
- Cania Gorge National Park - sandstone gorge and walking tracks, about 25 km north.
- Lake Cania (Cania Dam) - fishing, boating and picnics.
- The Three Moon silos and the Mulgildie Bunyip - two quick, photogenic stops south of town.
Where to eat and stay
Monto has the town services you need for an overnight, and the Grand Hotel Monto is a good base in the middle of it all - a feed, a cold beer and a room. It's your local while you're here, not the only option in town.
