Three Moon Silo Art & the Monto Art Trail

Just south of Monto, the Three Moon silos rise beside the Burnett Highway - the most northern stop on the Australian Silo Art Trail, and a lead-in to a wider public-art trail through town.

The Three Moon silos

The silo mural shows an Aboriginal elder sharing Dreaming stories with his granddaughter, drawing on the legend that gives the district its name - the tale of three moons seen at once: one in the sky, one reflected in the creek, and one caught in a billy at the water's edge.

The work was painted in 2020 by mural artists Joel Fergie ("The Zookeeper") and Travis Vinson ("Drapl"). There's a viewing area opposite the silos - the safe spot to stop and take it in.

The wider Monto art trail

The silos are the biggest piece, but not the only one. Monto has painted water towers and street murals through town, plus sculptures at Lister Street Parkland, all part of a public-art trail worth an hour of wandering. See the Things to Do in Monto guide for the full picture.

Photographing it safely

Use the designated viewing area rather than stopping on the highway shoulder. Soft morning or late-afternoon light is kindest to the colours. It's a quick stop - allow ten to twenty minutes unless you're chasing the perfect shot.
