Lake Cania (Cania Dam): fishing, boating & day trips

A short drive on from Cania Gorge, Lake Cania (Cania Dam) is the North Burnett's go-to spot for a line in the water, a paddle or a lakeside picnic.

Fishing at Lake Cania

Cania Dam is a stocked impoundment - restocked by the local fish-stocking association - and is well known among anglers for its saratoga, along with Australian bass, golden and silver perch. You can fish from a boat or throw a line from the bank near the ramp.

Anyone 18 or over needs a Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) to fish here; under-18s don't. Check current permit rules and stocked species on the official Queensland Government page before you go.

Boating and on the water

There's a concrete boat ramp, and the lake is popular for boating and paddling as well as fishing. Confirm current on-water rules and any seasonal conditions before launching.

Facilities and picnics

The day-use area is set up for a relaxed few hours by the water. Facilities have included barbecues, picnic tables, toilets and a playground - confirm what's currently open before you rely on it. Camping isn't permitted at the dam itself.

Combine with Cania Gorge

Lake Cania sits in the same pocket of country as Cania Gorge, so the two make an easy one-day pairing - a morning walk in the gorge, an afternoon by the lake, and back to Monto for dinner.
