Kalpowar State Forest day trip from Monto

North-east of Monto, Kalpowar State Forest is a quiet patch of rainforest, eucalypt and hoop-pine country with a creekside camping area and a forest drive - a proper nature day (or overnight) out of town.

Getting there and access

From Monto, travel about 37 km north-east on the Monto-Gladstone Road to the Kalpowar State Forest turn-off. The gravel access road suits conventional vehicles, but the camping-area road crosses several steep gullies, so a four-wheel drive is recommended - 2WD and trailer access varies with conditions, even in dry weather.

The forest and the drive

Kalpowar packs in more than 150 plant species across rainforest, eucalypt forest and hoop-pine plantation. The roughly 20 km Kalpowar Forest Drive is a good loop to see it, and the forest is popular for walking and horse and trail riding.

Camping at Crane Creek

The Kalpowar camping area is a tranquil bush setting beside Crane Creek, with open grassy sites that suit families and larger groups. Camping permits and fees apply, and dogs on a lead are permitted. Book and check current fees on the official Queensland Parks page.

What to bring

  • All your own drinking water, food and fuel - come self-sufficient.
